About this course:

This training is designed for systemic therapists who want to strengthen their competence and confidence when collaborating with psychiatric providers, including psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners. Grounded in relational and systemic thinking, the course helps therapists better understand the most common psychotropic medications, clarify the distinct roles of prescribers and therapists, and improve communication across disciplines in service of more coordinated client care. Through lecture-based teaching, practical FAQ discussion, an interview with nationally known psychiatrist Dr. Frank Anderson, and a round-table with three local psychiatric nurse practitioners, participants will explore how to work effectively within larger treatment systems while maintaining a strong systemic lens. Special attention is given to reducing fragmentation of care, improving case coordination, understanding medication-related concerns that arise in therapy, and strengthening collaborative relationships that benefit clients, couples, and families. Participants who complete this course will be able to:

Describe major classes of psychotropic medications commonly encountered in clinical practice and their potential relevance to systemic case formulation and treatment.

Examine the roles, responsibilities, and clinical perspectives of psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners within multidisciplinary systems of care.

Demonstrate systemic communication and collaboration strategies that support effective coordination of care between therapists and psychiatric providers.   & Integrate relational, ethical, and culturally responsive principles into interdisciplinary treatment planning involving psychopharmacology and systemic therapy.
