Overview

The purpose of this on-demand, online course is to allow candidates for examination, students and others who wish to update their knowledge to review fundamental concepts and practices of marriage and family therapy (MFT). This course will allow individuals to identify both areas of strength and deficit in that knowledge, as well as give access to both primary and secondary resources that will enable them to improve overall systemic therapy awareness. In addition, practice questions are provided that will allow candidates to practice their test-taking skills.

The MFT Models and Exam Prep course provides summaries about fundamental knowledge from various major MFT models and theoretical perspectives. It is intended to be representative of the depth and breadth of knowledge that the applicant should consider as they prepare for the national exam. The course is also designed to give a brief overview of the content of the six domains covered on the exam, including a review of the AAMFT Code of Ethics, DSM 5, and specific test-taking strategies. The candidate for examination is also highly encouraged to refer to the material in the 2020 Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB) National Examination Handbook for Candidates.

Participants who successfully complete this course will:

  1. Identify the pioneers of family therapy.
  2. Compare and contrast various theories of family therapy.
  3. Assess, diagnose & monitor therapy progress from a variety of theoretical and model specific, systemic orientations.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of the primary legal and ethical aspects of MFT.
  5. Prepare for test taking strategies and the specifics surrounding the AMFTRB National MFT Exam.
